So the Lycoris sanguinea finally bloomed…The orange flowers are an attractive, almost glowing colour, especially when hit by sunlight, which the photos does no justice to.
Naked lady does a 'striptease' act. The flower stalk didn't grow any taller than 4 inches, probably due to the 'unreadiness' of the bulb to bloom. |
The stamens actually popped through the petals as they were opening. It looks like a cheeky teasing act, extending its sexy limbs and waving it on.
The stamens pop out first before the tepals full open. It is as if the 'lady' decides to stick her legs out first. |
Love the intense orange colour of L. sanguinea. They seem to lose that ruddy blood-red colour that the buds were as they bloom. |
The anthers seemed to shed a lot of pollen. Hopefully the flowers do not pollinate themselves and then wilt.
There was pollen on the petals as the stamens matured. Seems to be a copious pollen producer. |
The other two Lycoris bulbs have also done the same, i.e. put out flower stalk, with Lycoris ‘Fawn’ showing a more robust stalk than L. radiata that seems to be struggling with the flower stalk. This is quite unexpected as most people say they tend to sulk after being transplanted.
Looking forward to the bulbs multiplying so that there can be a mass display of flowers in the future, as this would be spectacular for this naked lady. Can't wait to hear from Diana (KBB) when she plant hers, as with the number of bulbs, the flower display she gets would be spectacular.
DeleteWah so radiant.
ReplyDeleteThe same lycoris batch baru tanam yang fawn tu je yesterday itu pun merata. Belum lagi buat one spot especially for lycoris.Mostly solitary cos I wanted to make a trial first which is the best location. Hopefully lycoris will multiply very quick in the tropics.
Ic. Harap-harap Diana dapat make a lot of bulbs...bolehler kita tanam berderet-deret buat display :-) Yang fawn tangkai bunganya naik makin tinggi. Cuma radiata yang slow and steady, hehehe.
DeleteThey seem to multiply quickly cos aurea yang dah berbunga sudah cabang empat . Now to see how long does it takes to mature. Baru sempat tanam radiata some semalam. I pun baru perasaan I forgotten to plant the hazuki elegance. oh as they bloom they grow taller is it.
DeleteWah, sampai cabang empat! Yang fawn masih meninggi, belum buat 'striptease' act lagi. Rasakan my radiata might be having some problem, the sheath and bud macam makin kuning walau belum keluar dari tanah :-(
DeleteHopefully the radiata willl bounce back. This week I try to complete the task plant bulbs yang in my possession lama dari lycoris. Nanti yang belanja tak kasi spending. Erk I dig here and there asyik jumpa bulb lain yang still dormant. Feel like spring this week banyak bulb dah bangun can see shoots poking out from the soil.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, nanti yang belanja merajuk kan... Rasakan radiata tu terkejut kot bangun awal sangat, macam nak bunga kat soil level bila tengok balik hari ini.
DeletePlanted some radiata bulb this week and last week.
ReplyDeleteYang last week ayam dah cakar keluar dah bulb dia.
This month I noticed trumpet lilium bulbs yang I tanam last year and lay forgotten cos dormant started to poke out shoots in different location.
Radiata keluar cantik juga. Nanti saya post gambar. Dah backlog kerja tak sempat nak go through photos
